Zhangjiajie National Park
This national forest park is located in the northwest of Wulingyuan, neighboring Suoxiyu and Tianzishan, natural scenic spots. It covers an area of 11,880 acres with 97% forest coverage. The forest itself has 98 woody plant families which include 517 species, over twice the total found in Europe. The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park opened to the public at the beginning of the 1980’s. It is known for its unusual peaks, tranquil water, and well preserved forest.
Fenghuang Ancient City
This fascinating city is well worth the four hour van ride. Its ancient city walls and gate towers, houses on stilts overlooking the river and temples dotted about the old town can easily fill a couple of days of touring. This is the home of a lively population of the Miao and Tujia minorities. Strolling at your own pace is the best way to see Fenghuang. Many of the back alleys in the old town maintain an intriguing charm. There is a treasure trove of old family pharmacists, traditional shops, temples, ancestral halls, and crumbling dwellings. Restored fragments of the city wall lie along the south bank of the Tuo River in the old town, and a few dilapidated chunks can be seen elsewhere.
